The country has been on a fast track growth path over the last few years. The faster the country’s development, the greater the strain on its resources and the higher the demand for energy, thereby sharpening the effects of climate change. However, slowing down this development drive is out of the question as urbanisation gathers pace and India seeks to catch up with the developed countries. In fact, 50 million homes and 240 million Indians in rural areas still exist without electricity, even as surplus power is available in parts of the country.
