Since becoming an employee-owned company in November 2014, Freedom Industries Inc. in Rocky Mount has grown as a business. The local full-service contracting company in electrical, mechanical and fabrication was recently rewarded as the 2017 employee-owned company of the year for the Carolinas Chapter, which covers both North Carolina and South Carolina. Derrick Vick, vice president and chief financial officer of Freedom Industries, said there are 800,000 employee owners in the Carolinas Chapter.

“The thing we want to convey is this isn’t all about management making all this growth but the hard-working men and women in the field,” Vick said. “They wake up every morning and give a 110 percent with productivity. They care about this company and work safely as well.”

Freedom Industries is recognized as an Employee Stock Ownership Plan company, which is an employee retirement income security act plan designed to invest primarily in the stock of the sponsoring employer. Doug Ezzell, president of Freedom Industries, who started the company in 2004 formerly as Freedom Electric, decided along with his wife as co-owner to go 100 percent employee-owned in 2014.
